Overview
Pierrot is an interactive augmented reality effect created for Instagram and Facebook. The project explores the overlap between AR and VR workflows, bringing together animated 3D elements, custom interactions, and multi-layered visual transitions.
A dedicated variation of the effect was created for the Exthereal Conference in Finland—an international event focused on fashion in extended reality. The effect was designed to be experienced directly on the user’s face, shifting between concealment and reveal through interaction.
VR-Based Modeling
Some elements of the 3D effect were created directly inside virtual reality. Working in VR allowed the forms to be shaped spatially, treating the elements as physical objects before refining them further in a traditional desktop pipeline.
Venetian Carnival Inspiration
The face makeup draws inspiration from Venetian carnival masks. Without copying existing designs, it explores the same visual language.
Animated Glitter
The eye-area glitter was built as an animated element with close attention to small highlights. Each piece began as an individual 3D object with a custom shader reacting to light sources, forming the final looping animation used as part of the makeup.
Interactive Structure
The effect was built in Meta Spark with a layered interaction system. Certain 3D elements were rigged and paired with simulated physical behavior, responding to head movement to suggest weight and motion.
Ink-Like Transitions
A multi-step interaction reveals and conceals the mask through alpha-channel transitions. With each tap, the effect appears, partially recedes, or dissolves completely - unfolding like ink dispersing in water and gradually exposing the user’s face.
